  1. Thanks to everyone that voted on the recommended changes to our Constitution & Bylaws -- they passed! You always have access to them on the About ICTM page on our website. 
  2. Check out ICTM's new Math Community Circles! Join us and continue the discussion about "Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics." Peter LIljedahl's sessions were a big hit at the conference and our first Math Community Circle discussion about his book was awesome! We have more meeting dates planned and hope you can join us as we support one another in implementing Peter's 14 practices.

  1. Invite the ICTM Pres to Math Class! ICTM is celebrating its 55th Anniversary this year! We are inviting K-16 math educators across the state to help us shine a positive light on all the great learning happening in Iowa math classrooms. The 'Invite the Pres to Math Class' campaign seeks to amplify the importance of high-quality math teaching and learning and let Iowans know what a great job our educators are doing to prepare our students! Think of it as a special day to celebrate math learning by inviting a special visitor, our ICTM Math President, to show-off students' excitement for math learning. Our goal is to visit 55 classes this school year! Use this form to "Invite the Pres" to your math class. Dates are currently full through December 2022. Reservations are being made for January - April 2023.

    1. Do you know a fabulous teacher that deserves to be acknowledged at the highest level? Consider the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST): The Nation's Highest Honors for Teachers of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM, including Computer Science).

      This year's awards will honor science, technology, engineering, or mathematics teachers working in grades 7-12. Nominations close on January 9, 2023.

      Applications for 7-12th grade teachers are now open. Applications must be completed by February 6, 2023.

    Grants

    As you write your individual career development plan, remember to apply for the Marilyn Zweng Professional Development Grant. Grant monies can be used to take a class, join a webinar, or go to a conference outside of NCTM or ICTM. We will award annually up to 20 Marilyn Zweng Professional Development Grants of at most $250 each to support ICTM members in improving their instructional practice in mathematics teaching by engaging in a one-time professional development opportunity. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so apply now!

    Professional Development Opportunities

    1. 3-D Thursdays for Rural Educators  Join hosts Rachael Arens and Michael Guarraia at NASA’s Science Mission Directorate the first Thursday of each month from 7-8 pm CT as they present a webinar series for K-12 rural educators across the nation. The webinars highlight NASA’s assets and connect rural educators to resources, networking, and further professional development opportunities. Visit the NASA Community Page to watch former episodes and reach out to the guests for further resource information!

    2. From Math By Memorizing to Math By UnderstandingThe Global Math Department is hosting a FREE webinar, "From Math By Memorizing to Math By Understanding" on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 from 8:00-9:00 pm (CST). Recommended for K-12 math educators, NCTM's new President, Kevin Dykema, will share his experiences with how a focus on equity and the 8 Effective Teaching Practices can help every child be successful in learning math. 

    3. Are you looking for ways to support students who struggle in secondary math? Are you interested in learning evidence- and research-based practices to use with your students? If your answer is yes, this workshop is for you! 

      Registration is open for the M^Powering Secondary Math Students workshop with Barb Dougherty on Apr. 4 - 6!  This is available for 1 licensure renewal credit with additional coursework.  The event is capped at a total of 75 participants so register early. 
      There is NO COST to attend any of the learning, other than the cost for licensure renewal credit ($35) or curriculum purchase if participants choose.

      Overview: 
      Apr. 4, 8:30 - 3:30:  Evidence-based practices to support students in secondary math 
      Apr. 5, 8:30 - 3:30:  Exploring the M^Power curriculum to address gaps for general education, intervention time, and/or SDI instruction 
      Apr. 6, 8:30 - 12:00 (Facilitators only): Specifically for those who plan to facilitate the previous 2-day professional learning back in their AEA or district.  Must have a strong math background.

      Register online for the block of rooms at the Holiday Inn Express across the street from Central Rivers at a group rate of $80/night, or call the hotel and ask for the M^Powering Secondary Math block.  Reserve by Mar. 3.  

    4. Are you a Mathematics Coach/Curriculum Director or Leader? Then IA-NCSM is for you: IA-NCSM is the Iowa Affiliate of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics for connecting, learning and leading the Iowa Mathematics Educator community. Here's what's in store for the 2022-2023 school year:
      • IA-NCSM will be attending the ICTM Conference and beginning its 2022-23 Professional Learning Series with not one but TWO sessions where the focus is on coaching mathematics.
      • Beginning in November 2022, IA-NCSM will host 6-additional sessions and provide a licensure renewal credit!

    5. Did you know that Iowa Virtual Professional Learning offers anytime learning for Iowa license renewal credit?  Check out Foundations of Fractions and Christina Tondevold's Building Math Minds IntroductionInside this module will be links to the self-paced courses "Building Math Minds: Flexibility Formula K-2nd" and "Building Math Minds: Flexibility Formula for 3rd-5th Grades".
