Hear from our 2023 First Year Teacher Grant Recipient

"A highlight of my first year of teaching has been getting to know each and every one of my students. Their talents and skills amaze me. I especially enjoy using strategies from Building Thinking Classrooms by Peter Leljedahl to see the unique ways students think through problems. One of my favorite activities we have done in Pre-Calculus has been using exponentials and logarithms to study the lasting impacts of the Chernobyl nuclear explosion." - Lydia Butters

New! ICTM Learning Network to Connect Teachers

The first meeting was February 27 with a presentation for new and experienced teachers, "What I wish I knew sooner about teaching word problems using key words" by Lynn Selking. Presented to new and experienced teachers, Lynn and Sharon Jaeschke talked different types of tape diagrams. Many of the (mostly secondary) experienced teachers had no idea that there are so many different types of addition and subtraction models!

Watch for another learning opportunity for early-career and future teachers in April on "What I wish I knew before I started my first teaching job" which will involve asking newer teachers to share their thoughts with students getting ready to graduate.

Please plan to join us if you are a new teacher. If you work with student teachers please let them know about this opportunity! Watch the April newsletter and social media for more info. Email Deidra at ICTMmzgc@gmail.com for details or to sign up.

Tricks are NOT for Students! By Kevin Dykema

The Butterfly Method. Keep Change Flip and Keep Flip. Change. There’s no doubt you’ve seen or heard these mathematics learning tricks and several others. I’m sure you’ve also heard, “Yours is not to reason why; just invert and multiply.” Or you’ve noticed a student who has learned to “cross multiply and divide” and begins to apply it to multiplication of fractions or division of fractions rather than to proportional relationships.

What message do we send to our students when we present mathematics as a series of tricks? Read more of the NCTM President's Message.
