2022 Annual Conference: Building Connections...Math + More
ICTM is hosting our annual conference on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at DMACC's FFA Enrichment Center,1055 SW Prairie Trial Parkway, Ankeny, Iowa 50023
The theme of the conference is "Building Connections...Math + More" featuring Peter Liljedahl, author of "Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics", as keynote speaker. For the first time our ICTM conference will have a Featured Speakers Series! We are excited to welcome the following to Iowa:
- Doug Clements is our PK-2nd Grade Featured Speaker. Doug is known for his work in Early Learning Trajectories in math and is excited to return to Iowa.
- Dionne Animata is the 3rd-8th Grade Featured Speaker. Dionne is the founder of Math Trust. Her work in supporting schools and teachers to look at math instruction with an equity lens is inspiring. She was the Lead Writer for the IM K-5 curriculum and also works with Unbound Ed.
- Kaneka Turner will be the Coaching and Leadership Featured Speaker. Kaneka is the founder of ReImage. She worked with Mike Flynn at Mt Holyoke College and has an extensive background as a classroom teacher, math coach and elementary math specialist, serving in one of the nation's largest urban districts. Kaneka's coaching efforts were recognized for state gains in student achievement.

Conference + Book Study = Licensure Renewal Credit
Our online book study on Peter Liljedahl's "Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics 14 Teaching Practices for Enhancing Learning" will be held this fall in conjunction with our 2022 Conference. One licensure renewal credit will be offered. The class is through AEA Learning Online and will run from October 19th to November 29th. Most of the class will be asynchronous, but there will be 3 zoom sessions to attend. There will be weekly journal assignments. "Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics 14 Teaching Practices for Enhancing Learning" is required. Register for the class here.

- Make your voice heard! Vote on recommended changes to ICTM's Constitution and Bylaws. Voting closes October 12.
- ICTM is introducing "Math Community Circles." You asked and we listened! ICTM members shared that they would like to engage with other math teachers and build community. Many members indicated it would be great to have a way to share and talk about areas of interest. Find out more about ICTM's launch with Math Community Circles here.
- Happy 55th Birthday, ICTM! We are celebrating 55 years of supporting Iowa's math teachers and math education with an "Invite the Pres to Math Class" campaign. We are envisioning sending our ICTM President all over the state in 2022-2023 to visit math classes and amplify the importance of high quality math teaching and learning. Help us shine the light on our awesome Iowa math educators and students! Invite the Pres to YOUR math class here.
Do you know a fabulous teacher that deserves to be acknowledged at the highest level? Consider the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST): The Nation's Highest Honors for Teachers of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM, including Computer Science).
This year's awards will honor science, technology, engineering, or mathematics teachers working in grades 7-12. Nominations close on January 9, 2023.
Applications for 7-12th grade teachers are now open. Applications must be completed by February 6, 2023.

Iowa State University is hosting an Actuarial Science Career Day for High School students and teachers on November 3 from 9am-3pm at the Kingland Hub, Gerdin Business Building. Lunch is provided and busing grants are available.
During the event, students get to meet with practicing actuaries and learn about the actuarial profession. They will learn how actuaries approach data science, mathematical modeling, and risk analysis. In addition, they get to review past MTFC (Modeling the Future Challenge) training scenarios, and get help in identifying their own project proposal.

Grants
- 2022 ICTM Conference Grant Awardees are Christine Galle of Central Lee CSD and Paul Lauger of Humboldt CSD. They were each awarded $200 to help with conference expenses.
- In September, 15 first year Iowa math teachers were awarded the Marilyn Zweng First Year Math Teacher Grant. Full-time math teachers received $250 and teachers teaching math less than full-time received $200. Visit our website for details on all ICTM grants. Let ICTM support you in reaching your professional goals!
- As you write your individual career development plan, remember to apply for the Marilyn Zweng Professional Development Grant. Grant monies can be used to take a class, join a webinar, or go to a conference outside of NCTM or ICTM. We will award annually up to 20 Marilyn Zweng Professional Development Grants of at most $250 each to support ICTM members in improving their instructional practice in mathematics teaching by engaging in a one-time professional development opportunity. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so apply now!
- Please consider applying for the 6th annual professional development grant co-sponsored by TODOS and NCTM! Fostering Support for Multilingual Classrooms provides financial assistance to PreK-12 schools for in-service to increase understanding and expertise in fostering support of multi-language development when teaching mathematics. Grant maximum: $4000. Applicants must be TODOS and NCTM members by the date of application. Deadline: November 1, 2022.

Are you a Mathematics Coach/Curriculum Director or Leader? Then IA-NCSM is for you: IA-NCSM is the Iowa Affiliate of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics for connecting, learning and leading the Iowa Mathematics Educator community. Here's what's in store for the 2022-2023 school year:
- IA-NCSM will be attending the ICTM Conference and beginning its 2022-23 Professional Learning Series with not one but TWO sessions where the focus is on coaching mathematics.
- Beginning in November 2022, IA-NCSM will host 6-additional sessions and provide a licensure renewal credit!

Check out Foundations of Fractions and Christina Tondevold's Building Math Minds Introduction. Inside this module will be links to the self-paced courses "Building Math Minds: Flexibility Formula K-2nd" and "Building Math Minds: Flexibility Formula for 3rd-5th Grades".
