Conference Speaker Highlight
Featured Speaker Kevin Dykema is President of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). He has taught 8th grade mathematics for over 25 years and is currently at Mattawan Middle School in southwest Michigan. Kevin co-authored Productive Math Struggle. He has also written several articles for Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12. Register now for the Fall Conference to see him in person!

Pre-Conference Secondary Workshop Highlight
Exploring High School Statistics and Probability through Hands-on Activities and Technology with Maryann Huey and Wendy Weber. Monday, October 21, 2024 9:00am - 3:30pm DMACC's FFA Enrichment Center
In this workshop, you will explore statistics and probability content through engaging, collaborative, and hand-on activities and experiences. You will also delve into the art of effective teaching of statistics and probability by unpacking pedagogies that help students build essential concepts, procedural knowledge, and reasoning skills. Plan on leaving with several activities, virtual resources, and free software that can be used immediately in the classroom.

Planning to attend the ICTM conference on Oct 22 but need financial support? We have a grant for that!- ICTM Conference Grant ($400) to support two ICTM members' attendance at the ICTM Annual Conference on October 22; due August 31.
Interested in pursuing professional learning or a project? We have a grant for that!
- ICTM Teaching and Learning Grant ($750) to support professional learning or a project that supports access & equity for all students or is linked to the Iowa Math and Practice Standards or the 8 Effective Teaching Practices; applications accepted on a rolling basis.

Free Courses for Academically Talented Iowa Students The Belin Blank Center’s Iowa Online AP® Academy (IOAPA) provides qualifying Iowa students free access to advanced coursework. For high school students, these courses are a part of the College Board’s Advanced Placement® (AP) program. High school-level courses are also made available to eligible middle school students. AP exam scholarships are available, with preference given to students from rural schools.

The Teaching Fractions Toolkit
Check out this exciting professional development and partnership opportunity for Iowa school districts/schools that serve 6th graders.
The Teaching Fractions Toolkit (TFT) offers free research-based professional development and resources to help grade 6 teachers in Iowa improve students’ abilities to understand and solve problems with fractions, using recommendations in the What Works Clearinghouse Developing Effective Fractions Instruction for Kindergarten through 8th Grade practice guide. The toolkit was developed by Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Midwest, which is funded by the Institute of Education Sciences at the U.S. Department of Education.
What are the benefits of participating?
- Teachers will receive training on using evidence-based practices in fractions instruction to use in their classrooms to improve student outcomes.
- School and district math leaders will receive resources to facilitate the PD and support teachers in improving their fraction instruction.
- Schools and districts will receive summaries of research findings specific to their school and district.
