In Memory of Teresa Finken
Teresa had a significant impact on mathematics education in Iowa. Not only was she a mathematics teacher educator, she tirelessly served as ICTM’s Post-Secondary Vice President and oversaw the management of the journal for ICTM. Teresa dedicated 11 years and numerous hours reviewing, editing, and writing articles for the journal. Teresa believed in the journal, and it is with this in mind that we are reviving the journal as ICTM Journal 2.0. At the 2023 Fall Conference, ICTM presented Teresa with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
We invite you to join ICTM and Teresa’s family & friends on Saturday, June 8, 2024 from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM for Teresa’s Celebration Of Life at The Heights Rooftop, 901 Melrose Avenue, Iowa City, IA 52246. Official Obituary

Iowa Affiliate of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (IA-NCSM)
IA-NCSM is a great way for all Iowa math teacher leaders, instructional coaches, district specialists or administrators to connect with other job-alikes and discuss best practices in mathematics at the state and national level. Join IA-NCSM.
Join IA-NCSM on May 8 from 4:15-5:00 PM for the last virtual discussion of the year on The New Iowa Academic Standards for Mathematics. This will be a structured discussion of the new standards and not professional learning about the standards or a substitute for the Iowa Department of Education professional development. Meetings will not be recorded, but the slide-decks will be made available. Email iowacsm@gmail.com for more details and the virtual link.

ICTM Learning Network to Connect Teachers
On Monday, April 22, about 20 students from ISU and Central College attended a Learning Network meeting on what to expect as a first-year teacher. Marty Beck, Sharon Jaeschke and Deidra Baker from the ICTM board fielded questions.
Students asked questions about meeting student needs, managing time, differentiating instruction, and maintaining good relationships with students and parents. Pedagogy and classroom management issues were also discussed. Students feel well-prepared in their mathematical knowledge, but expressed concern about how to share that knowledge with their future students so they understand the math content, something most experienced teachers share and continually work on throughout their careers.
ICTM is proud to support future and new math teachers. Explore and share resources available to all teachers, especially new and future teachers!

The Teaching Fractions Toolkit
Check out this exciting professional development and partnership opportunity for Iowa school districts/schools that serve 6th graders.
The Teaching Fractions Toolkit (TFT) offers free research-based professional development and resources to help grade 6 teachers in Iowa improve students’ abilities to understand and solve problems with fractions, using recommendations in the What Works Clearinghouse Developing Effective Fractions Instruction for Kindergarten through 8th Grade practice guide. The toolkit was developed by Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Midwest, which is funded by the Institute of Education Sciences at the U.S. Department of Education.
What are the benefits of participating?
- Teachers will receive training on using evidence-based practices in fractions instruction to use in their classrooms to improve student outcomes.
- School and district math leaders will receive resources to facilitate the PD and support teachers in improving their fraction instruction.
- Schools and districts will receive summaries of research findings specific to their school and district.
